Facilitating and leading Agile Release Trains

The Release Train Engineer is one of the most demanding and impactful roles in SAFe. As chief servant leader and facilitator for the ART, the RTE is responsible for keeping multiple teams aligned, coordinated, and continuously improving across Programme Increments. This requires a particular blend of facilitation skill, coaching capability, and programme-level thinking that goes well beyond what any individual Scrum Master role demands.

This course gives participants a thorough grounding in what the RTE role actually involves day to day: from planning and running PI Planning events, to managing cross-team dependencies, to coaching Scrum Masters and team leads on how to improve. It also covers the servant leadership and relentless improvement principles that keep a train performing well over time rather than drifting back to old habits.

Delivered as a private cohort for an organisation, the course allows RTEs, aspiring RTEs, and Agile coaches to develop a shared approach to ART facilitation within their own context.

What your people will learn

  • How to lead and facilitate an Agile Release Train as a chief servant leader
  • How to plan, prepare, and execute PI Planning from end to end
  • How to manage programme-level risks, dependencies, and impediments across teams
  • How to apply Lean-Agile principles to improve ART flow and delivery predictability
  • How to coach Scrum Masters, teams, and ART stakeholders in new mindsets and practices
  • How to facilitate the Inspect & Adapt workshop and drive systemic improvement
  • How to build high-performing, continuously improving teams across the train
  • How to lead distributed and remote ARTs effectively across time zones

Who this course is for

  • Scrum Masters ready to move into the RTE role or already operating at that level
  • Existing Release Train Engineers who want to strengthen their facilitation and coaching practice

Why organisations choose this course

The RTE role is often filled by experienced Scrum Masters or programme managers who are effective within their existing frame but have not yet developed the ART-level facilitation, coaching, and improvement skills the role demands.

This course addresses that gap directly, giving RTEs, new and experienced, the tools and mental model to lead a train rather than just manage within one.
