Getting Agile development teams ready for the Release Train

SAFe for Teams is the starting point for Agile development team members who are joining a Release Train. It assumes participants are in, or about to join, a delivery team on an ART, and gives them the practical grounding to operate within that system: how to plan and execute iterations, how to engage in PI Planning, and how to work alongside other teams to deliver value at scale.

The course reflects the latest SAFe guidance, including the AI-enabled version of the certification. We position that pragmatically, focusing on how AI can support planning, flow optimisation, and backlog work, while keeping sound Agile thinking and human judgement at the centre. For organisations planning a new ART launch, running the course in the weeks immediately beforehand is a well-established approach.

SAFe for Teams or Leading SAFe?

It is a question we are asked regularly, and worth getting right. SAFe for Teams is designed specifically for Agile development team members who are joining a Release Train, and it focuses squarely on team-level and ART-level practice. The course covers nothing about portfolio management, Lean budgeting, or enterprise governance.

Leading SAFe takes a broader view of the whole framework, from portfolio strategy and Lean budgeting through to team execution and PI Planning. It is the better general introduction to SAFe and is well suited to leaders, managers, and consultants who need to understand how the framework fits together across the enterprise.

If you are not sure which course is the right fit for your group, please do get in touch and we can talk it through.

What your people will learn

  • Their role on the team, and the team’s role on the Agile Release Train
  • How to apply SAFe principles to Lean-Agile delivery at team level
  • How to plan and execute iterations and participate effectively in PI Planning
  • How Agile teams work with other teams on the ART to deliver value
  • How customer focus, flow and built-in quality support better outcomes
  • How to refine backlogs and work in cadence with the wider Train
  • How to inspect, adapt and improve team and ART performance
  • Where current SAFe guidance introduces AI-enabled practices in a practical way

Who this course is for

  • Agile team members working within, or moving into, a SAFe environment
  • Software developers, testers, analysts and other contributors on delivery teams
  • Scrum Masters and team-level coaches who need a stronger Train-level grounding
  • Product Owners working within a delivery team on a Release Train
  • People preparing to attend their first PI Planning event as part of a new ART launch
  • New team members joining an established ART who need to get up to speed quickly

Certification and exam

This course prepares attendees for the SAFe® Practitioner certification and is aligned to the current AI-Empowered SAFe for Teams course definition.

  • SAFe® Practitioner (SP) certification
  • 45 multiple choice questions
  • 90 minutes
  • 76% pass mark
  • Two exam attempts within 60 days included
  • Unlimited practice test with feedback and coaching report
  • Perpetual access to the course workbook and SAFe Studio for preparation
  • Annual renewal (20 continuing education units per year)

Scaled Agile recommends sitting the exam reasonably soon after the course, ideally within the first month, while the material is still fresh.

Scaled Agile now also offers a standalone proctored exam for those who wish to pursue the SP certification without attending a course, at $495 per person. For individuals with prior hands-on SAFe experience who want to formalise their knowledge, that route exists. For organisations booking group training, the calculation looks rather different: AgilityPro's base price covers up to ten people, which works out considerably less per head than the standalone exam fee alone, with two days of structured learning, exam coaching, and discussion grounded in your organisation's context. For any team preparing to work on a Release Train, the course is the more sensible choice.

What attendees get after the course

  • Course workbook and certificate of completion
  • Eligibility to sit the SAFe® Practitioner certification exam
  • Access to SAFe Studio resources for additional preparation and continued learning
  • Practice tools, learning resources, and wider SAFe community access
  • Digital badge on successful passing of the certification exam

Prerequisites

The course is designed for people who are in, or are joining, an Agile development team on a Release Train. It does not assume prior SAFe knowledge, but it does assume the context: participants should be part of a delivery team rather than attending purely for general awareness. For those intending to sit the certification exam, the following background is also helpful:

  • Experience in software development, testing, business analysis, product, or project work
  • Some familiarity with Scrum or Agile ways of working
  • Confirmed or upcoming membership of a team on an Agile Release Train

Why organisations choose this course

The most common use case is running this course in the weeks just before a new ART launch, so development teams arrive at their first PI Planning event with a shared understanding of the framework, their roles, and what is expected of them.

It also works well for onboarding new joiners onto an existing Train, or for refreshing consistency across teams that have developed their own local habits over time.
