Understanding the product ownership role from the inside out

The Certified Scrum Product Owner course investigates the Scrum framework in detail, from theory and foundations to practical application, covering all team roles, events, and artefacts while focusing specifically on the work of the Product Owner. Taking on the Product Owner role can feel daunting whether you are new to Agile or have spent time working near Scrum teams. This course gives you the knowledge and confidence to occupy that role effectively.

An effective Product Owner works collaboratively with stakeholders to define the product vision, communicates that vision to the team, and is responsible for the Product Backlog: its creation, ordering, and refinement. The course covers all of this, alongside the Product Owner's contribution to Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and Retrospective.

The course is delivered by Jon Spruce, a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer, and includes how the Product Owner role applies in real-world situations such as remote teams, fixed-price contracts, and third-party supplier relationships.

What your people will learn

  • How to participate actively as a Scrum Team member
  • How to function effectively as the Product Owner for the Scrum Team
  • How to deliver a successful Scrum product or project
  • How to explain and communicate Agile benefits to key stakeholders
  • How to collaborate with stakeholders and customers
  • How to create and maintain the Product Backlog
  • How to fulfil the Product Owner role in Sprint Planning and Sprint Review
  • How to participate in Daily Scrum and Sprint Retrospective
  • How to employ Scrum in real-world circumstances such as remote teams, fixed-price contracts, and third-party supplier relationships
  • How to help a team or organisation transition to a more Lean and Agile way of working
  • How to combine Scrum with Kanban, XP, and other Agile approaches

Why organisations choose CSPO

A strong Product Owner is one of the highest-leverage roles in a Scrum team. When the Product Owner understands the role clearly, the team spends less time on the wrong things, Sprint Reviews become more meaningful, and stakeholder relationships improve. A CSPO course gives the Product Owner the foundation to fulfil the role with authority and clarity rather than reacting to whatever seems most urgent.

Organisations often use this course alongside the CSM to ensure the two most critical Scrum roles are aligned in their understanding of how the framework is intended to work.
